Anton SMEERDIJK

Anton Smeerdijk (1885-1965) was a Dutch painter who was born and died in Kortenhoef. As a member of a family of artists from ‘s-Graveland, he showed an artistic talent at an early age. As a child, he made sketches of the interior during services in the reformed church, which he later turned into rembrandtesque paintings.

He had the privilege of studying at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam, where he, like many others, studied under Professors Alleb, Dake and Van de Waay. His fellow students included the later modernists Jan Sluyters and Leo Gestel. His early work shows that he was deeply influenced by the Hague School.
