Georg STERNBACHER

Georg Sternbacher (* April 21, 1933, in Unterkochen; † April 22, 1995, in Aalen) was a German painter and artist. Initially, he trained as a glass artist in his father’s business, which charted his professional path. From 1950 to 1953, he attended the Glass School in Rheinbach. In 1953, he began studying painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, where he soon became a master student under Josef Oberberger.

In May 1958, he met his partner Ute Bohe, who was a year younger, at the academy. During this time, he was awarded four academy prizes and received a scholarship from the French government in 1959, allowing him to study for a year at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. After a year in Paris, he returned to his Swabian homeland, where he married Ute Sternbacher-Bohe in 1963. The couple had two sons. The family initially lived in Unterkochen and moved in 1970 to a converted farmhouse in Bopfingen-Oberriffingen, where Georg established his studio as a freelance artist.

Since 1960, he was a member of the Free Munich and German Artists Association (e.V.), the professional association (BBK) in Munich and later Stuttgart, the art association of the Diocese of Rottenburg/Stuttgart, and the German Society for Christian Art. He lived and worked in Oberriffingen from 1970, undertaking many study trips to nearby and distant countries. During this time, he created numerous artworks for clients both domestically and abroad, as well as many paintings that enriched numerous national and international exhibitions.

Since 1986, he focused intensely on the theme of “Environment and Destruction,” resulting in committed material images, ink paintings in books and on sheets, as well as objects made from found materials. Georg Sternbacher passed away on April 22, 1995.

He regularly exhibited both domestically and internationally from 1960, including at the Haus der Kunst and the gallery in Finkenstraße in Munich, as well as in Paris, Wuppertal, St. Lô, Rome, Tatabánya, Stuttgart, Karlsruhe, Augsburg, Cologne, Heidenheim, Nördlingen, and Aalen. His works are held in public and private collections, including the State Gallery Stuttgart and the Municipal Gallery Aalen, and he is represented in numerous catalogs. He participated in public and invited competitions under the “Art in Construction” initiative.
