Karl Kauffmann

Karl Kaufmann (* 1843 in Neplachowitz, Austrian Silesia; † April 27, 1905, in Vienna) was an Austrian landscape and architectural painter. He was a student at the Vienna Academy. His study trips to Northern Europe (Norway), Holland, Germany (Franconia, Danzig, Königsberg), and often to Italy (Naples, Rome, Venice) provided him with the subjects for his numerous landscape representations, notably many views of Venice.

From 1900 onward, Karl Kaufmann lived permanently in Vienna. He often signed his works using pseudonyms. He used various other names, including R. Benda, Byon, H. Carnier, W. Carnier, F. Gilbert, O. Halm, C. Charpentier, J. Holmstedt, Charles Marchand, R. Merkner, B. Lambert, E. Leutner, M. Heger, Hobart, L. van Howe/van Hove, R. Jäger, Laarsen, Lundberg, F. Marchant, J. Marchant, C. Poul, F. Rodek, J. Rollin, H. Rohr, Ch. Erkan, A. Lorenzo, Taupiac, P. Toretti, L. Voigt, or K. Schwartz.

Today, most of the painter’s works are in private ownership. Karl Kaufmann was the elder brother of the landscape and marine painter Adolf Kaufmann (1848–1916).
