Klages Klump

Karl Seifer (pen name: Klages Klump; February 5, 1899, Groß Düngen near Salzdetfurth – June 6, 1972) was a German farmer, writer, dialect author, and painter. Born during the German Empire’s industrial boom in Groß Düngen, a village later incorporated into Bad Salzdetfurth, Seifer took over his father’s small farm and led a life deeply rooted in his rural community and its traditions.

Writing under the pseudonym Klages Klump, he produced numerous works characterized by earthy humor and a deep connection to rural life. Among his most renowned books are As Rekrute beu de Dragoners. Streike und Belewnisse (1927), Mein Ochse Hannes. Eine Geschichte mit urwüchsigem Humor (1988), Unter der Dorflinde. Ernste und heitere Erzählungen (1988), and Düt un dat in Hoch un Platt (1988). Many of these works, often written in Low German dialect, capture both the humorous and serious aspects of village life.

In addition to his writing, Seifer pursued painting as a self-taught artist. His artistic endeavors further showcased his creativity and his dedication to his regional heritage.

In Bad Salzdetfurth, the Klages-Klump-Weg serves as a tribute to his contributions as a cultural figure of the area.
