Ruth VON SCHOLLEY
Ruth von Scholley (1893 – 1969)
Ruth von Scholley, born on May 16, 1893, in Stuttgart and passing away on February 7, 1969, was a notable German painter. In 1925, she created a portrait of Ludwig von Köhler, the rector of the University of Tübingen at that time, which was intended for the university’s gallery of professors.
In 2012, an oil painting, believed to be by von Scholley, was acquired at auction by the painting and sculpture collection of the Fembohaus City Museum in Nuremberg. This previously unknown portrait, identified as that of Carl Johannes Fuchs, is unsigned; however, it features a barely legible inscription on the back in pencil that can be interpreted as “v. Scholley.” The shoulder-length portrait depicts Professor Fuchs in his official robe and is thought to have been cut from a larger original format.
Additionally, von Scholley created a still life measuring 51 × 61 cm, featuring an Asian vase and a wobbly pagoda, which bears an exhibition label from the Württemberg Art Association on its reverse side.
