Classicism in literature and philosophy

Classicism, which was not limited to the visual arts but also influenced literature and philosophy, led to a re-evaluation of ancient cultures and their influence on the modern world.

Literary revival
In literature, classicism manifested itself in a shift towards strict forms, clear structures and precise language. Authors such as Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Friedrich Schiller in Germany, or Alexander Pope and John Dryden in England, orientated themselves on ancient models and strove for a universal aesthetic.

Philosophical influences
The philosophy of classicism was strongly influenced by the ideals of the Enlightenment. Philosophers such as Immanuel Kant and Voltaire strove for rationality, order and universal morality, which were reflected in the basic principles of classical antiquity.

Social impact
Classicism also influenced the education system and social values. The rediscovery and study of ancient texts led to a new appreciation of the humanities. Education and cultural education were seen as essential elements for an enlightened and progressive society.
