Anton Hoffmann

Anton Hoffmann (* April 10, 1863 in Bayreuth; † January 26, 1938 in Rothenburg ob der Tauber) was a renowned German artist who was active as a painter, illustrator, military scientist and university lecturer.

After nine years of service in the Bavarian Army, Hoffmann began his studies at the Munich Art Academy in 1889, where he was taught by Gabriel von Hackl and Wilhelm von Diez. He successfully completed his studies in 1895. From 1896 he was a regular exhibitor at the Glaspalast. Hoffmann remained artistically connected to the Diez school and concentrated on history and military painting. His painting style was characterized by broad, broad but lively brushstrokes and strong, lifelike colors, with the light always emphasizing the central events.

As an expert in military history, Hoffmann created important series on the uniform history of the Bavarian army. As a member of the South German Illustrators’ Association, he was also responsible for numerous illustrations in school books, youth literature, historical works and the “Fliegende Blätter”. He produced five autotypes for the story “Die Umm ed Dschamahl” by Karl May, published in the Regensburger Marien-Kalender in 1899. In 1905, Hoffmann was one of the winners of a competition for advertising designs organized by Ludwig Stollwerck and Otto Henkell.
