Florin CIUBOTARU

Florin CIUBOTARU (1939-2022). By deconstructing his social position, his role and his status, Florin Anton Ciubotaru is a (meta)critical painter. Like many of his notable contemporaries, he was a student at the “Nicholae Grigorescu” Institute of Fine Arts, from which he graduated in 1963. Since then, he has followed a path of challenge, exploration, questioning and endless rethinking. This is partly due to his lack of patience for the masquerades, i.e. the processes in the world of culture. His communications in connection with his own exhibitions as formulaic, empty ceremonies are decidedly meaningful. His art is similarly reflective: by layering and obscuring representational devices in intimate compositions, the artist is likely to be the only one who fully recognizes and understands them. Ciubotaru’s obsession with freedom of expression and his refusal to give in to what he perceives as a problematic system are perhaps behind the cryptic nature of his work.
