Franz BARBARINI

Franz Barbarini was born in Znojmo in 1804 and died in Vienna on January 20, 1873. He was an Austrian landscape painter, engraver and etcher whose works were known for their artistic quality as well as their realistic depiction of nature.

Barbarini began his artistic training in 1824 at the sculpture school of the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts, where he studied under the guidance of J. N. Schaller and J. Kempel. At the same time, he worked as an engraver for gold and silver manufacturers. After this initial work in the field of sculpture, however, Barbarini decided to devote himself entirely to landscape painting.

During his career, Barbarini undertook numerous study trips through the Austrian, Swiss and Bavarian Alps, where he found inspiration for his works. He created realistic oil paintings, watercolors, drawings and etchings that captured the beauty and diversity of the Alpine landscape.

Franz Barbarini also had an artistic family, as his sons Gustav Barbarini (1840-1909) and Emil Barbarini (1855-1933) were also active as painters. Their artistic legacy continued their father’s tradition and contributed to the diversity of the Austrian artistic landscape.
