Hans HUNZIKER

Hans Hunziker (1927-1987) was a Swiss painter known for his works in watercolor, oil painting and screen printing.

Born and raised in Zurich, Hunziker completed his training at the Zurich School of Applied Arts and at the art school of Zurich artist Henri Wabel. He continued his studies at the “Grande Chaumière” in Paris, where he developed his characteristic style, which he retained until the end of his life. Hunziker also studied at the Free Academy in The Hague.

Hunziker experienced an important phase in his artistic development during his travels through Europe, which he undertook on foot. He walked from Hamburg to Marseille and later traveled through Italy and France. He spent four years in Paris, where he lived in former Hemingway and Miller apartments and worked for three years with Jean Tinguely.

In the 1970s, Hunziker lived with his family, consisting of his wife Sylvia Hunziker-Laubscher and his daughters Nathalie and Claudia, as well as many animals, on the Mettlen farm in Bichwil for four years. After suffering a heart attack, he moved to Elvissa on the Balearic island of Ibiza at the end of the 1970s. The landscape of Ibiza found its way into his artistic works, as did landscapes from the south of France and eastern Switzerland. His painting style was influenced by Vincent van Gogh and Lovis Corinth, whereby his pictures stand out due to their particular intensity of color and radiate a sense of calm and serenity.

In addition to painting, Hans Hunziker was also active in jazz music. He was a member of the “Trester Seven” and the “Porridge Brass Band”, which was conducted by Prof. Marthaler and performed at the first jazz festival in Zurich.
