Hugo CHARLEMONT

Hugo Charlemont (1850-1939) was an Austrian painter who came from a family of artists. As the son of the miniature painter Matthias Adolf Charlemont and brother of the painters Eduard and Theodor Charlemont, he was surrounded by artistic creativity from childhood. His daughter Lilly Charlemont also followed the family’s artistic tradition.
Charlemont began his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in 1873, where he was taught by Eduard von Lichtenfels. He also learned printing techniques and the art of etching from Arthur William Unger. He later continued his training with his brother Eduard and Hans Makart. He also undertook study trips to the Netherlands and spent several years in Venice.
Charlemont was known for his versatility and talent in various genres of painting, including landscapes, still lifes, animals, genre scenes and portraits. His works included oil paintings, watercolors and gouaches, with his Impressionist-style landscapes standing out in particular. Although modern art broke new ground in the 20th century, Charlemont remained true to his own style and did not allow himself to be influenced by contemporary trends.
His grave is located in the Döblinger cemetery in Vienna, where he rests in a grave dedicated in his honor. Hugo Charlemont left behind a significant legacy in the Austrian art scene of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
