Johann Bernhard Schmelzer

Johann Bernhard Schmelzer was born in Annaberg in 1833 and died in Dresden on September 10, 1909. He was a German genre painter, caricaturist and draughtsman who also worked as an illustrator of children’s books.

Schmelzer received his training under Julius Hübner at the Royal Saxon School of Arts and Crafts in Dresden. After completing his studies, he worked in Dresden as a caricaturist and book illustrator. His works were published in the Gartenlaube from 1859 and were later also published in Wahren Jacob in the 1890s.

His life ended in 1909 in the Dresden-Johannstadt City Hospital.
