Peter M. Bauer

Peter M. Bauer (1946-2020) was a German artist who worked mainly in Brazil. He was born in Wolnzach, Bavaria, in 1946 and died in Recife, Brazil, in 2020. His artistic career began as early as 1960, when he worked intensively in Stuttgart with various art forms such as ceramics, tapestry, batik and masks. He received formal training from renowned artists such as Master Gerhard Schmid and Dodo Kroner, which enabled him to deepen his skills in painting. From 1967, he devoted himself entirely to painting.

In the 1970s, Bauer developed a unique painting technique and turned away from portraits to concentrate on depicting nature motifs. His works often depicted animals, birds, fruit and the mystical world of unicorns, which he painted with great attention to detail. Bauer worked in various formats, from small paintings to large-format canvases.

During a vacation in Pernambuco, Brazil, Bauer discovered the fascination of Olinda in 1987 and decided to settle there. In 1991, he bought a historic house at Rua do Amparo 215 and officially moved to Olinda. His dream of living in this UNESCO World Heritage city became a reality in 1999 when he opened his Pousada Peter and his studio. Since then, his home has been a magnet for people from all over the world who are drawn to Bauer’s art and the beauty of Olinda.

Bauer has been actively involved in the art scene not only in Brazil, but also in Germany. His works have been shown in numerous exhibitions in German cities as well as in international galleries such as in New York and San Francisco. His artworks can be found in public and private collections all over the world. In Brazil, he organized successful exhibitions that made his talent accessible to a wide audience. His manager, Valdi Coutinho, a renowned journalist, art critic, artist and dramaturge, supported him in planning his career and marketing his art.
