Samuel Frère

Samuel Frère (1845-1931) was a multi-talented artist and intellectual. He made a name for himself both as a writer and a painter, and was particularly well known for his landscape paintings.

During his career, Samuel Frère played an important role in the artistic community of his home region. He was president of the Société artistique de Normandie, a society dedicated to the promotion of the arts. He was also a member of the Académie des sciences, belles-lettres et arts de Rouen, a prestigious institution dedicated to the sciences, fine arts and literature.

In addition to his artistic activities, Frère also worked as a music critic for the “Journal de Rouen”, a well-known newspaper in Rouen. In this role, he contributed to musical discussion and criticism in the region.

Samuel Frère was born into an art and culture-conscious family. His father, Édouard Frère (1797-1874), and his brother, Henri Frère (1836-1903), were also active in the arts. The artistic tradition and cultural heritage of his family certainly shaped his career and his diverse interests.

His life and work left a lasting impression on the artistic and cultural landscape of Normandy and beyond.
