In this article, we will look at a lesser-known but fascinating aspect of Superflat: the connection between art and consumer society in postmodernism.

Superflat and the postmodern aesthetic

The Superflat movement emerged at a time when postmodernism dominated art. This era is characterised by the rejection of traditional artistic conventions and emphasises the confrontation with mass media, consumer culture and globalisation.

Consumer society and Superflat

A central theme in Superflat art is consumer society. Artists such as Takashi Murakami take up elements of pop culture, consumerism and mass production and integrate them into their works. This integration of consumer goods and pop culture symbolises the postmodern aesthetic.

The aesthetics of “Kawaii”

Another characteristic element of Superflat is the use of “kawaii”, a Japanese term for “cute” or “adorable”. The use of cute, cartoon-like figures and motifs in art symbolises the connection between consumer culture and aesthetics.

The criticism of consumer society

Although Superflat picks up on elements of consumer society, it is also a critical movement. Artists like Murakami question the effects of consumer society on identity and self-worth. They show how the inundation of consumer goods and the emphasis on superficiality influence society.

Globalisation and superflat

Globalisation is another factor that has influenced the Superflat movement. The spread of pop culture and consumer goods on a global scale is reflected in the artists’ works. Superflat shows the cultural penetration and homogenisation that goes hand in hand with globalisation.

Superflat is not only an art-historical movement, but also a reflection of postmodernism and consumer society. The combination of high and pop culture, the emphasis on “kawaii” and the critical examination of consumer society make Superflat a fascinating movement that is deeply rooted in the cultural currents of its time.

Superflat, an art movement that emerged in Japan in the late 1990s and was characterised by artists such as Takashi […]

[15100

post-157585","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-unkategorisiert-en
["GET
