Traveling with his father to Nieuwpoort and Katwijk, he developed a passion for maritime motifs at an early age and met artists such as Eugen Kampf and Helmuth Liesegang. At the age of 15, he began his training at the Kunstgewerbeschule D\u00fcsseldorf and continued his studies at the Kunstakademie D\u00fcsseldorf from 1918 to 1923. From 1921 he was a master student of Carl Ederer.
