He began his training as an etching student with Carl Theodor Meyer in Basel and later studied at the Academy in Leipzig, where he collaborated with Andreas Curt Striegler and Dre\u00dfler. His artistic work was influenced by Heinrich von Z\u00fcgel and Max Liebermann. In 1916, Ackermann worked as a drawing teacher in Schlitz, Hesse, and was also intermittently an illustrator for the Rudolf Rother Mountain Publishing House in Munich. He was a member of the German artists\u2019 association \"die Juryfreien\" in Munich and exhibited in D\u00fcsseldorf, Berlin, and F\u00fcrstenfeldbruck.
