Drawing / Study

A drawing is a representation of a motif with lines and strokes that depicts it in a simplified manner. In contrast to painting, which uses colors and tonal values to depict a motif, a drawing in the narrower sense emphasizes the outlines of the motif. These lines can be supplemented by additional strokes (hatching) to create a spatial impression. The artistic drawing can be monochrome or use predetermined colors that are not mixed before application. Nowadays, however, numerous mixed techniques are used in artistic drawing, which often blurs the boundary with painting.

Any surface on which drawing materials can adhere or into which lines can be scratched can serve as a drawing medium. This can include rock walls, wood, clay and stone slabs as well as paper, colored paper or cardboard. The drawing media can be dry or liquid. Dry drawing media include graphite and metal leads, charcoal, chalks and wax, while liquid drawing media include gall ink, sepia and bister. Various tools are used to apply the drawing media, including pens, nibs, brushes and technical holders such as mechanical pencils and mechanical pencils.

Pencils such as graphite, lead and red chalk pencils are used in varying degrees of hardness and may have wooden casings or special holders. Charcoal and Conté pencils are also often used in wooden sleeves or with special holders. Liquid drawing media such as ink or India ink are usually applied with nibs or fine brushes. Nibs can be made of various materials such as bamboo, cane, steel or plastic. Brushes are used for drawing lines as well as for washes and are often made of fine hair or high-quality synthetic material.
